New findings have confirmed the efficacy of dietary vitamin supplements – including vitamin C and vitamin D – in helping the immune system fight off COVID-19.

Dietary supplements containing micronutrients and vitamins C and D are a safe, low-cost, and effective way of helping the immune system fight off COVID-19 other acute respiratory tract diseases according to a new report. The researchers note this is sometimes in amounts exceeding recommended levels.

The research was carried out by Adrian Gombart of Oregon State University‘s (OSU) Linus Pauling Institute and collaborators at the University of Southampton (United Kingdom), the University of Otago (New Zealand) and University Medical Center (The Netherlands), and findings have been published in the journal Nutrients.

Boosting the immune system with vitamin supplements

Vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, and an omega-3 fatty acid found in fish, docosahexaenoic acid, also known as DHA, are critical for immune function.

The researchers say that public health officials should issue a clear set of nutritional recommendations to complement messages about the role of hand washing and vaccinations in preventing the spread of infections.

Gombart, professor of biochemistry and biophysics in the OSU College of Science and a principal investigator at the Linus Pauling Institute, said: “Around the world, acute respiratory tract infections kill more than 2.5 million people every year.

“Meanwhile, there’s a wealth of data that shows the role that good nutrition plays in supporting the immune system. As a society we need to be doing a better job of getting that message across along with the other important, more common messages.

“The roles that vitamins C and D play in immunity are particularly well known. Vitamin C has roles in several aspects of immunity, including the growth and function of immune cells and antibody production. Vitamin D receptors on immune cells also affect their function. This means that vitamin D profoundly influences your response to infections.

“The problem is that people simply aren’t eating enough of these nutrients. This could destroy your resistance to infections. Consequently, we will see an increase in disease and all of the extra burdens that go along with that increase.”

Informing the public

The researchers are urging people to take a daily multivitamin as well as doses of 200 milligrams or more of vitamin C and 2,000 international units of vitamin D, rather than the 400 to 800 recommended, depending on age.

Gombart said: “A number of standard public health practices have been developed to help limit the spread and impact of respiratory viruses: regular hand washing, avoiding those showing symptoms of infection, and covering coughs, and for certain viruses like influenza, there are annual vaccination campaigns.”

He notes, that there is no doubt that vaccines, when available, can be effective, but they’re not foolproof, and emphasises that current public health practices – stressing social distancing, hygiene and vaccinations – are important and effective, but in need of complementary strategies.

A nutritional focus on the immune system could help minimise the impact of many kinds of infections.

“The present situation with COVID-19 and the number of people dying from other respiratory infections make it clear that we are not doing enough,” he said. “We strongly encourage public health officials to include nutritional strategies in their arsenal.”

  1. Linus Pauling was right. However, everyone should keep the following in mind, especially now with the corona scamdemic going on: there are many bogus voices around who strive to distract the public from the value of vitamin C therapy and the fact that Pauling’s VALID work with vitamin C supplementation has been “falsified” by data distortions and lies, and he as a person (a double Nobel laureate) has been slandered as some deluded idiot by the criminal medical establishment and its countless quackwatch shills, lackeys, ignoramuses, and trolls for decades and it continues today — search for the scholarly report “2 Big Lies: No Vitamin Benefits & Supplements Are Very Dangerous” by Rolf Hefti (a published author of the Orthomolecular Medicine News organization).

But you can’t discredit the facts with lies. That only exposes and discredits the liars (see citation above).

  2. I have handled COVID-19 in the early stage, not even knowing that I had it.
On Friday, March 13, I felt somehow tired. I thought that was because of the climate change (I was in Croatia at 24°C; on March 12 I came to 5-6°C in Romania).
On Saturday, I felt even more tired. I got pain in my chest when breathing deep. In the afternoon, I got increased temperature (37.6 °C).
I remembered the recipe for the vitamin-C bomb, which I got from my daughter some years ago. She lives in the US; she has this recipe from a doctor to cure heavy cold or influenza.
In such a case the body needs a lot of energy, so I cooked a strong chicken soup, took 3,000 mg of vitamin C with it. After 1-2 hours, I took another 2,000 mg – and went to bed.
On Sunday morning: normal temperature. The pain in the chest was less; tiredness was less, but I took another 3,000 mg with similar soup. I took some more after that, and went to bed again.
On Monday: I was already OK. I thought that I only had kind of cold, but the pain in the chest was something new for me, so I checked the coronavirus symptoms on the Internet.
I had all of them: tiredness, pain in the chest, higher temperature, and light headache. Only coughing was missing (according to the description on the Internet this was not unusual).
All was gone in three days after taking a lot of vitamin C – and I am over 80…
I stayed in self-isolation for the following 2 1/2 weeks.
The original recipe is like this:
    1. 2000 mg of vitamin C with breakfast
    2. 1000 mg vitamin C every hour after 1.
    3. Stop taking vitamin C when you feel an urge to go to the toilette. This urge is similar to the urge when one has light diarrhoea (that is how the body informs that it has enough ammunition to deal with the sickness).
    4. Continue with step 1 next day (and so on), till the symptoms disappear.
In light cases of cold, one can start with 1000 mg in the breakfast, and continue with 500 mg during the day.

    • Hi,
So do you crash the tablets and put in the soup or you just swallow the tablet as is? Also what vitamin C products as they are so many in the market.

  3. I read a report of a 3 year study on Vitamin C and sepsis. It was from VCU dated1Oct 19.Although the headline said the findings were : VIT- C was not effective for the organs (reason for the study) from sepsis but it noted that VIT-C patients spent 3 days less in the ICU and 7 days less in hospital all told with a 16 per cent less mortality than standard treatment. They are hiding the truth right in front of our eyes. This is with Vitamin C alone 16 g/day but too bad we were not studying mortality or time in the hospital .Many other factor we better than placebo but not according to % scores.Something stinks.

  4. When I was a young doctor , I used high doses of vit.C, 6g I.V. a day for various indications.
Then in 1985 or 1986 , I was persuaded that, my practice endangered my patients, the focus was ,on renal stones. I revised biochemical pathway and I stop the use in high doses.

Are you willing ,to take a minute to comment ?
My profesor of experimental oncology loved L.Pauling, I graduate at Torino Italy in1979.
    With kind regards.
